biografia - biography Pur se di antica famiglia aretina Lucio Gatteschi nasce a Chianciano. "Chianciano fegato sano" cittadina di acque termali e millenaria storia di civiltà etrusca in provincia di Siena famosa per il Palio. Siamo in terra toscana, regione nella quale sono nati un incredibile numero di artisti. In questa fantastica e bella regione, Lucio Gatteschi, per esigenze di vita si sposta dal mare di Pisa alla montagna pistoiese, da Montecatini Terme a Bibbiena in Casentino, dal Borro di S. Giustino Valdarno in Laterina, da Cortona, cittadina etrusca dalle origine più antiche di Roma, ad Arezzo, dove attualmente risiede. Nel susseguirsi delle stagioni di queste località bellissime. Gatteschi ha respirato le suggestioni e gli stati d'animo. Le primavere, le estati, gli autunni e gli inverni, così diversi del mare e della montagna, suggestioni che ora contribuiscono alla realizzazione delle sue belle opere. La svolta di dedizione alla pittura inizia dalle parole di una canzone dei Pooh "Dialoghi" ...prepotente la sveglia dissolve tutti i sogni, quinto giorno d'estate vissuto come gli altri... un istante e affondo dentro la città, i miei passi ormai sanno già dove si va, vado a rendermi utile a chi nemmeno so chi è, e dentro a grandi stanze illuminate, io, fino a questa sera mi rinchiuderò. Ma nella mente sale un pensiero certo insolito. In questa città invisibilmente, meridiano o qualcosa, passa proprio qui e ad un tratto mi ci sento sopra, ad un filo che fa il giro del mondo e nasce limpida un'idea dentro me. Quanto tempo ho perso fino adesso io, mi son fatto dunque attraversare anch'io dalle nuove stagioni, in silenzio, senza vivere. Ha chinato il capo la mia fantasia disperdendo l'ansia che sarebbe mia, di raccogliere dialoghi d'aria e farne poesia e semplicemente stando al posto mio ho dimenticato che respiro anch'io... Parole in musica talmente pesanti, talmente insostenibili da costringere Gatteschi a lasciare il cosiddetto "lavoro sicuro". Finalmente la solitudine, il silenzio della natura, quello che prima guardava senza vedere piano piano prendeva vita. Prendeva vita vivido e confuso il senso della vita. Nei suoi dipinti, flash di paradisi perduti, sulle nuvole diafani e trasparenti templi, le certezze del passato che oggi ci fanno sorridere, fantasie; interrogativi senza risposta! Fantasie; come i piccoli mondi versi che galleggiano nel cielo dei suoi dipinti. Non siamo forse noi passeggeri temporanei in un mondo che viaggia nell'universo" nel... nulla?

Even though he descends from an ancient Arezzo family, LUCIO GATTESCHI was born in the town of Chianciano which is outside Arezzo Province. The town is situated in the Province of Siena, a town now famous in its own right for the Palio. But the thermal waters of Chianciano were famous more than two thousand years ago in Etruscan times and, indeed, there is an old Italian rhyme which roughly translated says "for those Chianciano born a healthy liver adorn". Above all, however, Chianciano is in Tuscany, the birthplace of so many artists and the home of so many works of art. Tuscany is the incredibly beautiful, wonderful region where Lucio Gatteschi lives and where he travels about, going from the sea near Pisa to the mountains behind Pistoia, from the thermal spas of Montecatini to Bibbiena in the Casentino Valley where the Arno flows or the village of Borro in the Valdarno Valley, from nearby Laterina to the Etruscan hill town of Cortona, even older thanr Rome itself, and from there to Arezzo where he now lives. As one season fades into another in this region of enchantment, Gatteschi is able to breathe in its manifold charms and its changing states of mind. As summer follow spring, as autumn precedes winter, each is so completely different, one from another, so various as you move from the mountains to the sea and the enchantments thay offer can be found in Gatteschi's works. He found his original inspiration to paint in the words and music of "Dialoghi", a song by the well-known Italian popular singer The Pooh, which roughly goes: "The insistence of the alarm clock dissolves all my dreams; I wake up on the fifth day of summer but I will live through it just like all the others... a moment later and I'm drowning in the city, by now my footsteps know the way by heart, I'm going off to work for someone but I don't even know who and, inside those large, brightly lit rooms, I'll be shutting myself in until this evening. But a thought, a strange one certainly, comes to mind. The meridian of something similar passes invisibily through this city and, at a certain point, I feel that I'm actually passing over it, over this line that circles the world and, along with this image, a clearly perceived idea takes shape within me. How much time I've lost up to now. The season have been passing me by, silently, lifelessly, I haven't really been alive. My imagination was keeping its head down and not responding to the anxiety which I had deep down to snatch dialogues from the wind and turn them into poems. Quite simply, being there in that place I was forgetting that I too am alive and breathing..." So strong and so underbearably forceful were these words and music that Gatteschi had to leave his so-called safe job and seek out the solitude and silence of nature so that gradually he began to see what before he had been blind to and finally he started to live. In his paintings, therefore, you can find flashes of a paradise lost amidst diaphanous clouds and transparent temples, certainties from the past that today make us smile, as well as fantasies. Questions without replies! Fantasies like the little green worlds you see floating in the skies of his paintings. For aren't we, perhaps, all temporary passengers in a world which is travelling in universe "itself floating in a sea of nothingness"?
